South East Alcohol Innovation Programme

The South East Alcohol Innovation Programme aims to reduce hospital admissions caused by alcohol.

In 2007, 184,000 dependent drinkers lived in the region, which currently has the second highest number of alcohol related hospital admissions in England.

The programme has three main strands:

  1. Innovation grants - funding new approaches to reducing alcohol misuse.

  2. Outcome training for commissioners and providers - to help providers focus on the outcomes they achieve for their clients - a key factor in commissioning decisions.

  3. A regional forum to share ideas and good practice - open to all with an interest in the issues.

The Programme was commissioned by the Department of Health and It is being delivered by the Centre for Public Innovation.

From April to June 2009, 5,366 people were admitted to hospitals in the South East due to alcohol.
